Gerhard Richter. Images of an Era
Sat, 05/0 — Sun, 15/05/11 / exhibitionWhen Gerhard Richter, today one of the most highly esteemed artists in the world, fled to West Germany, he began to envision this new world in painted photographs. Today, in these works as a whole, we can discover the image of an entire era. The exhibition brings together around forty of these pieces and enables us to gain a new appreciation for the complexity of Richter’s pictorial universe where the trite and the sinister meet: the dreams and aspirations of the times (fast cars and the new way of travelling), personal recollections, the oppressive past and current politics as well as trivial but telling everyday objects (a laundry dryer, a fake chandelier). To understand the quality of memory that these images from the 1960s hold, the cycle October 18, 1977 (1988) dealing with the death of members of the Red Army Faction (RAF) is of major significance. On loan from the MoMA in New York City, it will be the highlight of this exhibition.
